Over the Barricades; Cambodian women and the fight against gender based structural violence. It’s quite a metaphor for the current situation. Heavily armed military police sit on top of high barricades and electric fences surrounding Phnom Penh’s Freedom Park. This week, the iconic meeting space in Cambodia’s capital, used for the last year by the opposition party to hold big rallies, has been closed – the government is publicly policing it’s ban on demonstrations and security forces are savagely beating anyone who comes close. But this week, whether they can enter the park or not, women in Cambodia are determined to protest. For women in Cambodia, this has been a very important week. Thursday was Labour day, and as ‘workers of the world unite’, this was another chance for the world to see what is happening in Cambodia, and another chance at making a change. As people in the UK dance with flowers in their hair celebrating spring – in the Kingdom of Wonder, women of the Cambodian Spring face up to police brutality, ‘climb the barricades’, and march through the streets.
